World’s most expensive piece of furniture sells for $7.3 Million

The recession has turned collectors toward traditional works of art big time. Collectors are willing to pay extraordinary sums for older masterpieces, though contemporary art has fallen through the floor in terms of value. Recently, Christie’s auction house made a world record for selling off one of the most expensive furniture pieces in the world from the era of the Sun King. The ornate Cucci Cabinet dates back to 1665 to 1675 and is one of three wooden cabinets crafted by Italian artist and master craftsman Domenico Cucci. This magnificent cabinet features Florentine “pietra dura” plaques with opulent gilt bronze mounts, elaborate marquetry and beautifully modeled figurative carving. Robert Copley, Christie’s International Head of Furniture and Decorative Arts said, “Christie’s global sales for traditional furniture and decorative arts have exceeded £140 million, so far this year. On behalf of the team, I am particularly proud that the exceptional Cucci Cabinet is now one of the most expensive pieces of furniture ever to be sold at auction - eight of the top ten have been sold at Christie’s.”
