Described as an “American jewel,” the iconic 1965 Shelby Cobra coupe was the first U.S.-made race car to ever beat Ferrari in world racing championships in Europe. The rare car is now expected to sell for between $10 million and $15 million, when it goes on the block at Mecum High Performance Auctions in Indianapolis on May 15. Economy be damned, the car might set a new world record, if it surpasses the $11 million paid for a 1961 Ferrari California Spyder. The 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra was one of six cars built by Carroll Shelby to compete against the dominating Ferrari in the F.I.A. World Manufacturers Championship for GT race class. The iconic car is bound to attract interest worldwide, but American car enthusiasts hope the car remains on U.S. soil only after the sale.
