While much of a Muscovite’s existence is spent scrambling for space in life, and afterwards, architectural styles in communal apartments satisfy the tastes of the Russian nouveau riche. The most expensive room in the communal apartment in the center of Moscow costs $366,000, enough to buy three one-room apartments on the outskirts of the city, along with a Mercedes. Analysts might be comparing the cost of the most expensive and cheapest housing in Moscow but for the young Muscovites who buy such rooms, these sorts of apartments are the best bargain, even though they were once the much-hated solution to Moscow’s housing crisis in the Soviet era.
