Karl Lagerfeld’s fur helmets were all the rage in his winter 2010 ready-to-wear collection, but if your PETA instincts have restrained you from wearing stylish fur clothing, then here’s a chance to proclaim your hidden desire to wear fur with James Faulkner’s fur headgear, which is rather made from the wings, feathers and furs of animals killed on roads. Though the very idea sent a chill down our spine, if your definition of sinister and fashion is blurred somewhere, then this is the new buzz in the fashion world. The designer says he found it very satisfying to make something beautiful from something gruesome and he reportedly got his inspiration after stumbling across a dead magpie on the side of the road, and he designed to use it for a hat for one of his friends.
“I knew that my friend’s dress was black and white so I thought it could work. I picked it up using a plastic bag and later used the wing feathers to make the hat. It sounds awful, but I cut off the wings with an axe.
“When I told her it was made of roadkill she was very shocked and said she had images of maggots falling off her head, but it went down a treat at the wedding.”
The designer will exhibit 36 animal hats in his macabre line at a fashion show this May. The story has reminded me of the cruel acts of Grenouille’s character from “Perfume: The Story of a Murderer,” all in his quest to make the perfect scent...what do you think?
