Her Majesty to have her own £3 million private jet
Naveen | Jul 9 2009

As part of the plans to cut the Royal Family’s ever-increasing travel costs, the Queen will soon have her own £3 million private plane. This plane is intended for use by the Queen and other royals only. Ministers won’t be using it. Currently, the two planes being used by the royal family are from 32 Squadron at RAF Northolt, but they are more than 20 years old and are supposed to be very unreliable. Sir Alan Reid, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, and other senior officials at Buckingham Palace will decide if it’s financially possible to buy the jet. The final decision will come by March next year. Till then, the Queen will travel on a chartered aircraft only. A source cited…

The Queen is naturally thrifty so we always try to reduce our running costs. The planes from 32 Squadron are not always available as ministers may need them at short notice and they have an operational role in the Middle East.

This summer, Her Majesty is taking delivery of a new Sikorsky chopper for the royal family’s official business, and it will be leased for £500,000 a year.
