Francis Bacon's Triptych 1974-77 could fetch $50 million

I have already listed Francis Bacon’s Bullfight painting and his self portrait in my list of top 10 most hyped auction sales of 2007. Now, a three-part painting by Francis Bacon called ‘Triptych 1974-77′ is expected to sell for 25 million pounds ($50 million) in London next month at Christie’s. The painting is one of a series of haunting works Bacon painted after the suicide of his lover George Dyer in 1971. The three canvases show a twisted figure on a beach, overlooked by two enigmatic, vaguely ominous figures. The Triptych 1974-77 will be part of Christie’s contemporary art sale on Feb. 6. It would be one of the most important Bacon pieces to appear at auction. Sotheby’s, is also auctioning major Bacon work for sale next month dubbed ‘Study of a Nude With Figure in a Mirror.’
