Another take off for jet pack, this time at £50,000!

utside of movies and comic strips very rarely has jet pack worked, especially as something that could be considered mainstream. But New Zealand born Glenn Martin says his flying gear will make us all airborne at a price of £50,000 ($100,000). He put to test Martin Jet Pack at AirVenture and had it off the ground for 50 ft (distance), 6ft (height) and 45 seconds (time). The display was met by loud cheers of the crowd at Oshkosh. Technically, however, experts maintain that Martin Jetpack is more of a fan-powered lifter than a jet powered gizmo; quite like Trek Aerospace’s Springtail, Urban Aeronautics’ X-Hawk and even Moller International’s flying car prototype. Building prototypes since his university days, Martin hopes that Martin Jetpack would go commercial next year itself. As a matter of fact, if you are game (and loaded) Martin is taking orders right now.

Little bank balance and 15 hours of training would equip you to fly one of Martin Jetpacks. And don’t you go worrying about whether it is safe enough for you. You see, Martin engaged his own wife Vanessa to do a little test piloting before making this one public. Now we all know who the lucky lady behind this venture is’ if it turns out to be a success that is.

Hmmm a height of 6 feet for 45 seconds. Absolutely no practical value there.

Would be useful for crossing rivers but with no ground to offer resistance, stuff like crossing canyons or jumping of cliffs is out of the question.

I still want one :)
