Nandini | Apr 5 2006

Airstream renowned for producing space cruiser-like aluminum camping trailers is commemorating its 75th Anniversary in 2006 with some very special new limited edition travel trailers. The first release is the Safari SE. Airstream has partnered with Nissan Design America and Kelty to produce a lightweight multi-purpose tent-trailer hybrid. The BaseCamp hybrid is developed on the lines of the original ‘Torpedo’ concept developed by company founder Wally Byam in the 1930’s. The BaseCamp van features aggressive styling with 20′ wheels, wrap-around windows, low profile stance and airstream’s trademark aluminum skin which makes it perfect to for any outdoor trip. The new BaseCamp van incorporates a clever lightweight tent-trailer design that can be towed by even small vehicles. The price tag of this luxury camper van is estimated to remain under $20,000. Airstream’s official site reports that one of the company’s top-selling models complete with a multi-disc DVD/CD changer with flat-screen TV will be used during the 2006 Sundance Film Festival as the GreenRoom Celebrity Lounge for top companies including WireImage, the LA Times, Hewlett-Packard and L’Oreal.
